We work outdoors, days hot, nights cold.
We’re Jewish--we know the prophecies of old,
But we never expected an angel to appear
To announce a birth, the Lord had come near.
We are poor and unimportant, yet the first to see
The infant Saviour, poor like us…God’s majesty.
Who are we?

The shepherds!
The shepherds are only found in Luke’s Gospel. (Luke 2:8-20) It is very important to Luke to have these contrasts – the Saviour who is born is announced to the poor first of all. The shepherds were Jewish and would have known that a saviour, the Messiah, would be coming – the people had been waiting for centuries for the fulfilment of the words of the prophets. They would NOT have expected to be the first to be told, however!
